Pool Decks

Adding a Swimming Pool Deck

Adding a pool deck to encase your pool or hot tub provides the perfect opportunity to create beautiful and functional outdoor living spaces that add tremendous value and enjoyment to your backyard experience.

You're much more likely to spend time in a room that includes elements you love, such as your favorite colors, décor, or furniture - the same of course goes for pool decks, too. This is why the planning phase of your pool deck is so important; it ensures that your pool deck, once installed, turns out perfect for your demands.

Swimming pool decks come in a variety of styles, but the main concern when installing a pool deck is often functionality.

Pool Deck Functionality

Every pool deck should be safe, slip-resistant, and easy on the feet. Ideally, your swimming pool deck should also be interlocked – allowing water to quickly run off between the pavers and into the ground, creating a safer and more pleasant pool environment. Finally, you want to make sure your new deck will look beautiful for a long time, require little maintenance, stand up to the weather, and return it's cost to you.

Limitations in traditional pool deck pavements and surfaces have had a very hard time living up to the demands of conscientious homeowners.

Whether it be the cost, beauty, durability, ease of maintenance, or functionality - the common solutions just don't offer it all.

A good pool deck has quite a few requirements to meet, but with interlocking paving stones you can rest assured that you have chosen the best pavement possible for your pool deck.

The following comparison between paving stones and alternate pool deck surfaces quickly illustrates the advantages pavers offer your pool deck design.

Pool Deck Materials

Wood

The leading cause of problems with wooden decks is actually water, making wood impractical for pool decks.
Certain wood types are a better match for rot – cedar, redwood, and pressure-treated pine, but no wood is rot-proof. Even without a pool around, few aspects of a home actually require as much maintenance as a wooden deck. Their life span is usually referred to in terms of 10’s of years, and being constantly exposed to the elements, a wood deck design needs sanding and requires treatment every year in order to maintain the desired look. Wood also has extremely limited slip-resistance and design options.

Concrete

Primarily used for its somewhat cheap initial cost, concrete pool decks actually often end up costing more than their higher-quality alternatives due to unforeseen maintenance and upkeep. By its nature, concrete shrinks and therefore cracks. Plastic-shrinkage cracks are immediately apparent, visible within 0 to 2 days of placement, while drying-shrinkage cracks develop over time. Exposure to sun, heat, rain, and cold catalyzes cracking. Spilled pool chemicals, drinks, tanning oils, and food can cause staining. Wet concrete surfaces are slippery, and lingering water can form into mold and mildew. Concrete sealers and coatings are available which help protect the concrete, but resealing is frequently required. Concrete is usually colored before it is poured. There are standard colors that can be added to the concrete as it goes into the truck, but the colors are not entirely predictable, and often vary from the intended color. Repairs leave ugly scar marks.

Paving Stone

Interlocking paving stones for your pool deck ensure a unique and slip-resistant design that will be interlocked, look beautiful for a very long time, and most likely outlive your home. Interlocking pavers allow water to run off between the pavers and into the ground - accelerating drying of the deck and contributing to safe conditions around your pool. Where traditional decks crack, mold, rot, or just turn worn and ugly - the strength and flexibility of interlocking pavers allow them to prevail through changes in the ground, climate, or spills - seemingly untouched. In the off chance a paver ever does crack or get stained, it can be individually replaced in minutes - without a trace. The natural textured surface of pavers makes them ideal for a slip-resistant pool deck. Paving stones do cost slightly more than concrete, brick, or other alternatives to install, but the long term savings of both time and money combined with the unique and stylish beauty pavers offer make it easy to understand why paving stone popularity is sky-rocketing.

We recommend taking advantage of the best pavement available in terms of appearance, cost, longevity, and ease of maintenance/repair, and the best pavement for your pool deck design is undoubtedly interlocking pavers.

Once you have chosen the pavement or surface you wish to use in your pool deck design, you can pick a contractor.

Choosing a contractor

By this point you should have a good idea of what you want your pool deck design to achieve, which functions you would like it to serve, the pavement type you wish to use, and the appearance you would like it to have. Keep in mind that not all pavers are laid equally. Improper installations of paving stone lead to problems of their own - including cracking, loose and/or uneven pavers, and even installations so bad that they must be completely redone.

Paving Stone installations can and should outlive your home, so why waste time and money on general contractors when Southern California's leading paving stone installers are servicing your area, and more reasonable than our competitors?
