Stone tile are tiles made from real stone or synthetically produced from concrete. Concrete tiles are manufactured to look like Mexican pavers or Saltillo tile.

There are two methods of producing concrete tiles or pavers.

One is by pouring a wet concrete mix into a mold and letting it cure. After several hours that paver can be removed from the mold. However, it will take days before it will be strong enough to use.

The strength of concrete is determined by two main factors: the amount of water and the amount of cement in the mix. To back up a step and define concrete, which is composed of cement, sand aggregate (gravel) and water. The more water the weaker the concrete and the more cement the stronger the concrete.

Typical concrete used for driveways that come from a concrete truck test out at about 2000 PSI (pounds per square inch). This will be the strength of concrete tile produced with wet concrete in a mold.

The other method of producing concrete pavers is by putting a very dry mix into a mold or press and to apply a large amount of pressure with a hydraulic press. The pressure on the dry mix forces the small amount of water that is in the mixture to set the cement. The result is a paving stone that tests out at 8000 PSI or more. The stone can be shipped immediately and obtains 80% of its strength within days.
