5 Patio Ideas For Getting Your New Backyard Started in 2018

2018 is officially here which means you have a clean slate to begin redesigning your backyard. Knowing where to start is difficult. There are a lot of patio ideas out there. Sometimes knowing what you would like is the hardest part of the process. That’s why we’ve created this list of patio ideas to help stimulate your inspiration for your new backyard. Beginning with the patio is a great first step because this is where you will probably spend most of your time in the backyard. It’s where friends and family congregate at the table to create memories, or where you might find yourself having your morning coffee with a newspaper.

Replace Old Concrete with Patio Pavers

The first step to updating your patio is to start with what’s underneath: the ground. It’s time to replace old, cracked concrete with pavers. Pavers are one of the best patio ideas to update your backyard for many reasons. Pavers look fantastic and they come in a wide number of colors, patterns, and shapes. Additionally, taking care of them is easier than concrete because if one stone becomes damaged or stained, it can be swapped out quickly while the rest remain. This is not possible with concrete (the entire section of concrete would have to be removed and re-poured). Finally, your home will see an increase in its value which you can read more about here.

Add a Pergola

If you live in Southern California, adding a pergola to your patio is one of our favorite patio ideas. Pergolas are gorgeous but they also are functional. They provide instant shade, if you don’t feel like waiting for your shade trees to mature. The sun is always out in Southern California so having ample shade makes your patio comfortable and usable.

Additionally, pergolas serve as an open trellis for growing beautiful plants. A great patio idea for a homeowner with a pergola is to grow a bougainvillea plant along the trellis. You can expect flowers that are purple, orange, or pink. They are one of the most beautiful flowering plants that would update any patio in little time.

Lastly, another great patio idea for a homeowner with a pergola is to install a shade cloth. These add a contemporary feel to the patio. We recently utilized a shade cloth in our design for the 2017 Pasadena Showcase, as seen in this photo.

Raise Your Patio a Few Inches

Does your backyard have a lot of potential for a beautiful view but you just can’t seem to get the perfect shot? You should consider elevating your patio a few inches. For homes that rest on a hillside, this is a great patio idea. Not only will you be able to have a gorgeous view beyond your property, the raised patio will also create balanced dimension in your backyard as the levels vary. View a better sunset but just make sure that you aren’t violating your neighbor’s privacy by peeking into their own backyard.

Entertain with an Outdoor Kitchen

Outdoor Barbecue and Fire Feature

Living in Southern California promises warm weather that allows you to bring the party outside. Entertain your guests with a built-in kitchen on your patio. There’s a lot to know about different types of outdoor kitchens. If you want to learn more, visit our post about it here. Simply put, the patio is one of the best places to entertain when you have an outdoor kitchen. It gives a homeowner another reason to spend more time on their patio.

Use Your Patio at Night with a Fire Pit

Our last patio idea is to install a fire pit. Just because the sun goes down doesn’t mean you have to take the party inside. Extend the use of your patio into the night with a fire pit. Adults and children alike can enjoy a fire pit, whether they’re roasting marshmallows or just chatting next to it. Additionally, when winter nights roll around, fire pits are a great source of entertainment for the night as you can warm up next to it. Learn more about them in our article here.
